“We are going to step up” – Olivier Giroud admits he and Morata have been poor for Chelsea

One thing that has lacked at Chelsea this season is goals. Despite the enviable possession stats that runs deeply in their favor, the strikers in the Blues squad have failed to deliver what’s required of them – scoring goals to help their team win games, and to score even more to make those leads more comfortable.

Alvaro Morata has scored five goals in the Premier League this season and another one in the Europa League, but has largely been slated for his profligacy in all the other games he failed to hit the back of the net. Olivier Giroud was initially protected by his ability to keep the ball in tight areas upfront and play in his teammates, but the narrative may have changed in recent weeks.

He has failed to score a single goal for the Blues the entire campaign in the league and that increases the alert signals. The speculations have been widespread but Giroud maintains he is unconcerned about those reports as he and Morata aim to prove critics wrong.

“All the speculation is part of the sport, part of the job. We must expect good players, good strikers at big clubs. But the both of us just need to carry on and show the team is doing well with us. It’s true that at times we didn’t score. But, as I always used to say, some strikers need to do the runs for team-mates, to do the things that people don’t see.

We are fully committed to Chelsea. Even if sometimes it wasn’t perfect, I will always give my maximum. I’m not worried about the future and I’m sure we will score more goals for the team. It (the talk of Chelsea signing another forward) doesn’t trouble me, no. I am a competitor and I will do my best until the end of my contract.”
