Why Gary Cahill needs to understand his time at the top is finally over

Chelsea beat BATE Borisov 1-0 to progress to the Europa League knock out stages with two games remaining but the performance of some of their stars in Belarus will be a major concern to Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian coach may have expected that his makeshift center back partnership will exert the kind of authority at the back in the absence of regulars this season Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz. However, Cahill, in particular, played quite poorly alongside Andreas Christensen.

The Blues captain has lost his position in Chelsea’s defense and looks somewhat a fringe player these days at Stamford Bridge but his awareness at the back sparks even more concern. Mistimed tackles and inability to read the game renders him absolutely useless when BATE attacked at times with wrong positioning.

The options will begin to open up for him in the coming transfer windows, but ideally, a summer departure will make more sense to both he and the club as a proper farewell can be put in place for him. But whatever the timing might be, Cahill’s time at the top is over and his days at Stamford Bridge are numbered unless he improves dramatically in the coming weeks.
