“It is definitely not a red card. Definitely not” – Former Premier League ref weighs in on two controversial incidents in Chelsea-Everton

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has had his weekly say on Sky Sports, ruling the roost over the controversial incidents from the action over the weekend.

Two of the standout moments were in the Chelsea game – perhaps as a 0-0 more attention was drawn to the refereeing calls. You can see all his takes on the controversy in the quotes that are carried on Football.London.

The first was early on, when Jorginho flew into a crunching tackle on Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelander eventually left the stadium on crutches, while Jorginho was given only a yellow. On this subject, Gallagher wasn’t ready to fully commit to saying it was straight red, and he ultimately backed the yellow the Brazilian was given.

The second incident was when Bernard headbutted Antonio Rudiger, who went down like a tonne of bricks. Both players were booked in the end, and Gallagher said he thought that was just about correct too:

“It was excellent teamwork because quite clearly the referee can’t see it. It is definitely not a red card. Definitely not. He has not in any shape of form caught him in the face that he is holding, it’s impossible.”
