“The defensive line ended up going down a lot” – Chelsea star blames everyone but himself for defeat at Tottenham

Chelsea’s first defeat of the Premier League season exposed the weaknesses of Maurizio Sarri’s explosive system and while some critics are pointing at Jorginho’s inability to defend in the defensive midfield role, the player believes it is rather the fault of the defenders.

As Chelsea’s main outlet for their attacks under Sarri, keeping Jorginho quiet is supreme in the list of the to-do-list for any opposition manager and Mauricio Pochettino plotted a perfect job on him. The Italian looked out of place and could barely control the tempo of Chelsea’s play at Wembley.

Concerns have risen within Chelsea’s fraternity that N’Golo Kante is being wasted on the right side of midfield. Critics say Sarri needs to return the Frenchman to defensive midfield but those claims will most likely fall on deaf ears with Sarri preferring to dictate play and Jorginho doing a fine job at that at least.

His defending was poor but the Blues defenders were even worse during the game. Both center backs were stretched while the full-backs also failed to keep up with Tottenham’s wide men.

Jorginho, chooses to blame the entire team for not pressurizing Spurs enough and admits the defensive line was at times non existent.

“Our team was not as compact as it always is. The first pressure wasn’t being made, I believe it wasn’t being made. So the defensive line ended up going down a lot and our team got very stretched.”
