Should Chelsea pay £40m for unproven forward?

Would Chelsea pay £40m for an unproven striker? That would be what happens if the rumours carried in the Metro yesterday come true.

The Genoa forward has been tearing up Serie A this season, with 13 in 13 for the coastal club.

Our issues with strikers mean we’re linked with anyone who does well on the continent, and especially when they’re in the homeland of our manager.

Piatek is now a regular for Poland too, learning from the master in the form of Robert Lewandowski. But would the investment of £40m that the report says we’d have to spend be worth it?

At the moment, as promising as he looks, he’s just a striker on a hot streak. If he’s still doing this come May we might have to reconsider. But our long-term issues of forwards isn’t going to be solved with impulse buys like this.

We need to take more care over who we buy up front, and make sure we’re getting the right man.
