Southgate’s faith hints Chelsea made Chalobah mistake

Nat Chalobah came on as a late substitute for England against Spain, making his debut for his country and giving a reminder to the footballing world that he still exists.

A season on the bench at Chelsea followed by a season mostly spent out with injury means that the midfielder has barely featured in people’s consciousness.

Gareth Southgate gave Chalobah as many games as anyone in his tenure as England U21s manager, and he has maintained that faith in his ability through this long spell out.

He’s only just making his first steps back for Watford, but Southgate has immediately brought him in to the squad.

That tells you a bit about the lack of quality England have in that position, but it also tells you what a quality player the former Chelsea man is.

It’s hard to imagine a better Jorginho backup who could be in our squad right now, picking up minutes.

We just have to hope that the higher ups at the Bridge are keeping as close an eye on him as we are.
