The numbers that show how Manchester United were able to nullify Jorginho

Chelsea had some good spells and some bad spells against Manchester United on Saturday, but Jose Mourinho insisted that his side had deserved to win. He pointed out after the game that he’d never seen Jorginho play so “weak” – and he had a point.

The Portuguese manager is always known for the way he plans for specific games, and this was no exception. He clearly made his best efforts to shut down the playmaker, and that’s evident from the stats after the game.

Given that everything usually goes through the Brazilian, he tends to have the highest passes and the highest touches on the team. That wasn’t the case on Saturday, as we can see from the numbers on WhoScored.

Jorginho had the fourth most touches, and the second most passes. Mateo Kovacic finished the game with one pass more than the former Napoli man – despite coming off after 68 minutes.

That just goes to show how much of a lid Man U put on our main man, and how vital it is that we work out how to play against teams looking to man-mark him.
