Why Maurizio Sarri won’t start Ruben Loftus-Cheek despite hat-trick

The moment a Chelsea youth product does well there’s a clamour from fans to get him in the team, and you can bet that this week was no different.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek made only his second start of the season, but picked up three goals in front of an adoring Stamford Bridge crowd.

The midfielder might feel he’s put himself front and centre to play against Burnley tomorrow, but Sarri still won’t start him.

Why? Because Jorginho and Kante are certain to play, and that leaves only one slot in the team. The battle for that spot is intense, with Mateo Kovacic, Ross Barkley and Ruben battling it out.

Kovacic also played in midweek, so we can rule him out, so Barkley will take the mantle this week. RLC has clearly just given himself a huge edge in the race, but Sarri won’t play him twice in a week, as he’s barely feature this season.

He even admitted himself after the game on Thursday that he was “feeling” his hamstrings.
