“He’s a great player” – Marcos Alonso hails unlikely Chelsea teammate after Spanish thrashed

Chelsea have a great team spirit in the camp at the moment after a bright start under Maurizio Sarri, and that’s only going to improve.

That camaraderie was evident evident even when we had Blues on different sides – as was the case last night in the Nations League game between England and Spain. Ross Barkley lined up for the Three Lions, and Marcos Alonso for La Roja, but there was only one winner.

England stuffed Spain 3-0 in the first half, with Barkley playing the key pass for one of the goals, and after the game his club teammate praised him highly in quotes carried by the Telegraph:

“Even at the World Cup England, despite playing well, were aware that they didn’t really have that kind of player, someone in the middle who played and made others play, who used the ball… He’s a great player. He showed it not just today but against Croatia too: he showed that he can be a great player. I hope he keeps improving and that he helps us at Chelsea to stay near the top.”

That’s great respect coming from a fellow international, and we’ve no doubt that Alonso will be proved right if Barkley keeps improving under Sarri at this rate. Let’s not forget that Alonso has played with some pretty decent midfielders in his time, and knows a talent when he sees one.
