“I feel like I’ve learned to be a man” – Chelsea defender explains how loans are improving him

Chelsea youngster Jake Clarke-Salter has given an exclusive interview with the Guardian which has some really interesting quotes about his past, present and future.

The defender had an awful spell on loan at Sunderland last season, which saw him pick up two red cards in just a short spell there. That was compounded when he picked up a third dismissal in less than 12 months.

Since then, fortunately, things have improved a lot. Jake has battled his way into the team at Vitesse despite that early setback, and is now looking to build on that success to to return to England next season.

In the interview he mentions that he spoke with Steven Gerrard at Rangers, but in the end he liked the idea of going abroad on his loan, in part to emulate the success of his old teammate Mason Mount:

“A lot of young English players at the moment have gone abroad. I think it’s the regular game-time that is important to us. That’s the main thing – playing games can open up so many opportunities. Mason is an example of that. He didn’t play much for the first couple of months at Vitesse, then all of a sudden he ripped the league apart.”

He will struggle to have as much of an impact as Mason, but let’s hope Jake keeps up his steady improvement.
