€18m a year Hazard contract claims are way wide of the mark

There were whispers across Europe yesterday that Eden Hazard is close to signing a new contract that got plenty of Chelsea fans hopes up. Sadly we’ve been digesting these clues overnight, and we don’t think there’s much to them.

Sportwitness tracked the original claims down to the Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian football daily. They’re a reliable source compared to most websites, given they have actual journalists and a physical product, but they’re not really in the know on this one.

Their headline claim is that Hazard will earn €18m/year after tax. That pretty good going, although you couldn’t say he doesn’t deserve it.

But their sources are vague, and when you go direct to a man who knows the Belgian game inside out, he’s quick to dismiss it.

Step forward Kristof Terreur:

He may have a slightly annoying manner at times, but Terreur is spot on when it comes to the players from his home country, and he’s got far better connections than the Gazzetta when it comes to Hazard’s future.

He’s the best source we have right now on this subject, and he says that talks are yet to start.
