Chelsea striker admits to Marseille transfer interest

It’s the international break, a couple of weeks where we have no club football to entertain us, but do have players heading back to give surprisingly honest interviews with the media in their home countries.

Olivier Giroud is no exception, and he gave a revealing interview with L’Equipe back in France. The Standard has his quotes here, and while most people have focused on him talking about how Chelsaa are the “top club in England”, he also had some interesting things to say about his transfer situation.

Speaking about interest in him in the summer, Giroud confessed that Marseille wanted him, but he explained why he wasn’t interested:

“There was contact [from Marseille] last year, but nothing really concrete this summer. It did not go as far as was claimed,” Giroud mused.

“I had just arrived at Chelsea, it was not the time to pack my bags again three months later.”

It seems like a sensible call, and he’s very quickly established himself as our number one forward again, so it will probably be vindicated by the number of games he’ll play this season.

As for next summer, we’re bound to spend big on a striker, and that could be Oli’s cue to leave.
