Willian given highest rating in West Ham draw in odd stats quirk

Willian was given a score of 8 by WhoScored in yesterday’s game against West Ham. That was the highest of any player on the pitch.

Anyone who watched the game would tell you that that’s nowhere near true. It’s a perfect microcosm of the problems with relying only on statistic to determine how well a player has done.

So many of the error in decision-making and execution by the Brazilian don’t count for anything, wheras his “completed take-ons” do.

To be fair to the winger, those second half attempts to dribble out wide were actually the best thing he contributed. West Ham were all too structurally solid, and we needed players to take the opposition on in the wide areas to stretch them and get in behind.

So to give him his due, he did bring some danger at times. But just like the rest of the Chelsea team, it wasn’t enough and it wasn’t often enough.
