“One of the best years in my career” – Willian reveals why last season under Antonio Conte was so good

Chelsea winger Willian is notoriously known for his confrontations with former Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte, which escalated when the player posted a picture on Instagram of Chelsea’s FA Cup celebrations that had Conte blanked out with emojis.

The winger has denied that was intentional, but what remains true were the frictions between the pair especially in the former Juventus boss’ last season at the club.

Willian is being used as part of the rotation policy on the right wing by Maurizio Sarri this season after Eden Hazard returned from his post-World Cup break to the first team.

But Willian, speaking to the club’s official website reveals, his time at Chelsea and in his European career has not produced a season as magical as last season, when he became a second time favourite of his teammates.

The Brazil star won Chelsea’s Player’s Player of the Year for a second time in three years, after his debut victory in the Blues’ disastrous season in 2015/16, when he emerged Chelsea’s only bright star, but last season when he scored the most goals, 13, Willian remembers that fondly.

“It was a great surprise for me when I won the Players’ Player of the Year last season, I did not expect that I had, and when they nominated me it was very emotional, and I was very happy. I don’t know why they chose me but I think I played very well last season, I think it was one of the best years in my career.

I improve a lot. Always when I go to the pitch I want to score goals and make assists for my team-mates, so I hope this season to do the same job that I did last season. I think I am in the good moment of my career. I am 30 years old and I arrive in the best moment of my career, so I just want to continue in the same way, to play the same or better than last season.”
