Olivier Giroud reveals the reason Chelsea couldn’t beat West Ham, and it’s worrying for the future

Olivier Giroud started his second Premier League game of the season, and it wasn’t nearly as successful as his first.

In that season debut he was vital for the team as they dismantled Cardiff. He picked up two assists for Eden Hazard as the Blues rolled to victory. Yesterday he struggled to impact the  game against a packed West Ham defence, and his connection with Hazard was lacking.

In quotes carried by the Evening Standard, the Frenchman refused to blame Europa League tiredness for an overall anaemic performance, instead he made a perhaps more worrying claim: that the Blues are being found out by their opponents.

“Now they are starting to know us well, so we need to bring something else,” Giroud said. “We have to recognise the best way to put a team in difficulties.”

If that’s the case it’s a real concern – a tactic that gets found out after just 6 games of the new season isn’t a very good one. But there’s clearly potential for more, and things could have been very different at the weekend with a few bounces of the ball in our favour.

At least we don’t have to wait long for our next game to put things right – we face Liverpool in the League Cup on Wednesday.
