Why Eden Hazard’s 5.65% “The Best” vote is actually impressive

FIFA’s long winded The Best ceremony was last night, and Eden Hazard was the only Chelsea player in the running. He finished behind Luka Modric, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mo Salah, Kylian Mbappé, Leo Messi and Antoine Griezmann in the final reckoning.

He got 5.65% of the vote, which may not seem impressive at first, but given Chelsea were a disaster last season, is actually pretty good.

It’s carried basically entirely by his performances at the World Cup, and his excellent start to last season in a team that was actually functioning. He didn’t get any help from his team through the rest of the season, while Modric and Ronaldo were banging in Champions League goals.

His brilliant form since the spring will come into play more next year too, and we’ll see him rise up the rankings if he carries on like this. The team looks better set up to help our star man, and he’ll hopefully keep shining under Maurizio Sarri.
