Delayed contract situation at Barcelona puts Chelsea on alert for top midfielder

Chelsea have reportedly been put on alert after the contract situation of Barcelona Ivan Rakitic continues to drag on.

The central midfielder’s current deal at the Catalonian club expires in the summer of 2021 and Barcelona have delayed in offering the kind of deal the player is requesting to commit his future to the club beyond the remaining three years.

According to TalkSport, The club’s president has revealed that the player is requesting a new deal but the La Liga giants currently do have the financial muscle to award him a new contract. That has alerted top Premier League clubs, who have shown interest in the Croatia international in the past.

Chelsea brought in Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic this summer transfer window, but the latter arrived at Stamford Bridge on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid and could return to the Madrid club next summer if the Los Blancos refuse to sell.

Manchester City and United are also reportedly keeping tabs on Rakitic’s situation at Barcelona.
