Official: Chelsea activate Kepa Arrizabalaga’s release clause to make him the most expensive goalkeeper in football history

Chelsea have officially activated the release clause of Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa to make him the most expensive goalkeeper in football history.

The goalkeeper arrives at Chelsea to replace Thibaut Courtois who is bound for Real Madrid, following his agitations to move to the La Liga club this summer.

As the laws of release clauses goes, the player’s representatives will have to buy the player out of the contract in order to free himself for a move to another club, and according to Bilbao’s official account on Twitter, that clause has been activated and the player is free to speak to Chelsea.

Dominic Fifield of the Guardian reveals the deal was struck early Wednesday morning to pave way for the goalkeeper to travel to London for his medical.

The deal means Kepa beats Allison Becker as the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, just weeks after the Brazil star moved from AS Roma to Liverpool for £66.8 million.
