“I very much enjoy his attitude” – Maurizio Sarri tells Chelsea star defender he will not leave the club anytime soon

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is convinced David Luiz will have a big role to play at Stamford Bridge in the coming months despite his failings in the past season under Antonio Conte.

Under Conte, Luiz was used sparingly last season and failed to nail a place down in the defensive department, with Andreas Christensen taking his place among the three-man defenders. Cesar Azpilicueta and one of Gary Cahill or Antonio Rudiger were preferred to the Brazil superstar.

But throughout pre season and the first Premier League game of the season, Sarri chose Luiz in his starting line up and has given strong hints the former Paris Saint Germain central defender will be a key figure in his squad this season.

After the Blues convincing win over Huddersfield last Saturday, Sarri says Luiz gives more than just his defensive qualities on the pitch and is one of the influential players in the dressing room as well.

“I don’t know about what happened in the past but now he has a good chance. We only have to carry on like we are doing now with him. I disagree that he can only play as one of three central defenders.

If you are a good defender, you can play in a line of three or in a four. David has a big future here. He will be useful for us but not just on the pitch. He is also very important in the dressing room. I very much enjoy his attitude when I am working with him.”
