Jorginho explains how his early life shaped his footballing style

Jorginho has had an interesting life.

Born in Southern Brazil, the fact that he had Italian ancestry meant he was able to get a European passport, and move to Italy at a young age to start his career in the big leagues, with most of his peers having to wait till 18 before they could sign fora European club.

The fact that he moved at such a tender age means that his game has been totally moulded by Europe, and he describes himself as Italian in a footballing sense: no wonder he chose to play for their national team.

Speaking in an interview featured on the official Chelsea website, he discussed in more detail his game, and how it’s been changed by his circumstances:

“In terms of football I’m a hundred per cent European,’ he says. ‘The characteristics I have are not associated with Brazilian football. I was born in Brazil, I grew up in Brazil and you can say that is where I grew up as a person, but then I trained and I developed and, speaking football-wise, I learned my game in Italy.”

He’s lost that mad flair that Brazilians tend to, and picked up a certain European coolness, which is displayed in his calmness under pressure and his style, dropping ever deeper to pick the ball up and then lay if off efficiently.

We’ve already got David Luiz in the team, so we’re covered for flair. Now, thanks to Jorginho, we have some real quality added to that too.
