Maurizio Sarri has just given his pre-Community Shield press conference, and he had interesting words about the future of several of his players.
When it came to Willian, he spoke confidently about the Brazilian’s future, as you can see in our piece on his quotes here.
But on the subject of Thibaut Courtois, he was much more uncertain. You can see his quotes in the Tweet from Goal.com’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella embedded here:
Sarri on Courtois: "At the moment, he is the goalkeeper of the club. I don't know on the future, it depends on the club and especially on him, I think. I hope Courtois will be our goalkeeper" #CFC

As you can see, Sarri in this case is deferring primarily to the club, but also to the keeper.
That just goes to show what power the keeper has in this arrangement, with his contract expiring in just a year’s time.
Clearly the club have told him he can leave when they find a replacement – although at this stage it’s not looking too hopeful.
Would it really be so bad to keep him on the risk of losing him free next summer? Who knows – if we’re top of the league at Christmas, he might even want to put pen to paper.
