How can tactician Maurizio Sarri make misfiring Morata effective again?

Alvaro Morata has been the subject of some criticism for his performance against Manchester City yesterday, and rightly so.

Some have also pointed out that the forward received almost no service in his 70 or so minutes on the pitch, and that’s true too.

But what exactly is it that Morata is supposed to be doing?

He doesn’t run in behind, he doesn’t come short for it, and the team don’t deliver the crosses he needs to be effective in the air.

His confidence is shot, that’s for sure, but that won’t change until he’s in a system that plays to his strengths. At the moment, every bad performance just drains him further.

It’s a major tactical issue for Sarri, who looks set to have to rely on the former Real Madrid man, at the very least as a squad player.

He has ability: in the air and with his feet in tight spaces.

How our new boss gets him in a position to use that ability is the big question. It will be fascinating to see what he tries.
