Spanish broadsheet explains why €40m Chelsea transfer hasn’t been completed yet

In Spain, they are reporting Thibaut Courtois’ move to Real Madrid as all but a done deal.

El Pais, the most famous and well respected of the country’s broadsheets, had a decent feature on the transfer yesterday.

They said that the deal is “agreed between all parts”, and that save for an “unexpected turn”, the Belgian will sign for Real soon.

The one thing stopping the deal happening already is Chelsea’s need to replace the goalie. Alisson Becker’s move to Liverpool has taken the best option off the table, and now it’s looking a bit desperate for Maurizio Sarri’s new team.

According to that same article, Courtois will move for no more than €40m, meaning Chelsea don’t have a huge amount to play with. Their top options are Kasper Schmeichel and Petr Cech, apparently. If that’s the case, we should be very worried.

So after years of wanting away, Thibaut will get his wish of returning to Madrid. He leaves Chelsea in a bit of a state.
