Official: Chelsea confirm Gianfranco Zola as new assistant head coach

Chelsea have named Gianfranco Zola as the new Assistant Head Coach of the club and will work under Maurizio Sarri.

It will be the first time Zola will return to Chelsea in an official capacity after a 15-year absence from the club, since since his playing days ended in 2003.

The Italians will work together for the foreseeable future and will look to reignite the passion of Chelsea fans that was lost in the latter days of Antonio Conte.

Zola is a true Chelsea legend having played between 1996 and 2003 and Stamford Bridge and fast becoming a cult hero. He played over 300 appearances at the club, scoring 80 goals in the process while winning two Player of the Year awards. Despite never winning the Premier League, Zola won the two FA Cups, League Cup, a UEFA Super Cup and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup to mark a glittering career in the famous blue shirt.

Zola says he is looking forward to an exciting start to life again in blue colors.

“For me it is an amazing thing. I am very willing to work hard because it is going to be a difficult challenge but I am pleased to be here, and to work hard with Maurizio to be successful. It would be great to be successful with Maurizio and for the club and I will give my best, as I did in the past as a player, so I will give my best in my new position.

I am very much looking forward to the challenge in general. I would love us to start well and we are all very excited to start this new adventure.”
