Is Mason Mount’s Derby move a good idea or a sidestep?

Later today Mason Mount will sign on loan for Derby for this season, according to widespread reports on the internet that emerged yesterday.

John Percy of the Telegraph was the first with the news, but it’s since been covered elsewhere too.

The signing has caused a disagreement over whether it’s a smart move for him.

After tearing up the Eredivisie at a young age, Mason is clearly ready for home. At Derby he will be under a manager in Frank Lampard who trusts him, and is under pressure himself to give the youngster a chance.

But if he does well in the Championship, will he then be given a try at Chelsea? As some have pointed out, still probably not. The logical next step then would be a midtable Premier League team.

From there he might be able to catapult himself into the first team… but as we saw this season with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, that isn’t always enough either.
