€18m Spaniard can be second Azpilicueta for Sarri

Chelsea are looking for reinforcements all over the pitch, but with a decent chunk of their budget already spent on Jorginho, they can’t fill every position of need with a superstar.

The need for cover in so many roles is what makes versatile players so useful, as Chelsea have found out to their benefit with Cesar Azpilicueta in particular in recent years.

Chelsea will need full backs if Maurizio Sarri is going to revert to a back four, and if they’re looking for a player who can play on both sides in that position, they can call off the search now.

Jonny Castro has been a superb presence for hometown club Celta Vigo since emerging from the youth academy, and the 24 year old is the perfect squad player thanks to his versatility, excellent physical attributes and one on one skills. Remind you of anyone?

Just like his compatriot Azpilicueta, he would be a bargain too. His release clause is just €18m euros, and they might even accept less given his contract expires in 12 months. Atletico Madrid had a bid of €8m rejected last month.

The Galician’s refusal to sign a new deal has also meant he’s been excluded from preseason training, as the club try to force him out while they can still recoup a fee.

He’s got tons of experience, having already racked up 222 appearances at the age of 24, and has a great attitude on and off the pitch. He’s the exact kind of smart pickup that Chelsea need to be making if they want to be able to afford to splash out on big names too.
