Chelsea’s new boss explains why transfers don’t interest him

Maurizio Sarri has had his first Chelsea press conference, and the whole thing went off smoothly.

With the exception of some awkward but inevitable questions about his past conduct, the mood was good and he seemed relaxed and confident in his new role.

One notable moment came when it came to discussing transfers. The topic was dismissed quickly, as Sarri claimed to find it “boring”.

This is of course a blow to the waiting journalists, who prefer a manager who will give them headlines by talking about targets.

It also gives managers a handy excuse when things aren’t going well. You can simply say the players aren’t good enough, and that’s that.

Sarri said instead that he prefers to focus on improving the players he has. It’s an admirable attitude, but we will have to see how it holds up.

At the very least, at least his disinterest in buying players will mean he has a smoother relationship with the club hierarchy than Antonio Conte did.
