Who is Chelsea’s best pick to play with Kante and Jorginho in midfield 3?

Chelsea now have two parts of a superb midfield three in place. N’Golo Kante and Jorginho between them provide a superb platform for a more attacking third man in the middle. But which of Chelsea’s current options fit the bill?

Tiemoue Bakayoko: Bakayoko risks being made obsolete in this new system. Kante and Jorginho between them do Bakayoko’s of winning and distributing the ball. Played further up he will be able to unleash his long stride with runs at goal, but does he really have the technique and goalscoring ability to play in the most advanced midfield role?

Danny Drinkwater: Another one who looks to be an ill fit for this team now that we have two better defensive minded midfielders. Expect him to be sold or loaned if Bakayoko isn’t.

Ross Barkley: Perhaps the most natural positional fit for the role, a good preseason could see Barkley become a real contender in this position. He has the technique and the positional nous to play ahead of the other two, and has the shooting ability from range too.

Mason Mount: The highest ceiling of any of these players, but perhaps still a shade too young. A solid loan to a Championship team this season will see him ready to slot in in 12 months.
