Chelsea won’t allow €40m star to go without top replacement in place

The sale of Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid is closer than ever, and as we get there we are getting some concrete facts on the matter.

A price has now been named, at least in theory. Kristof Terreur, a Belgian journalist who covers the Premier League and is well known for his connections with players from his national team, says it will be a €40m fee.

It’s a small fee in reality, which reflects the fact that the stopper only has 12 months left on his deal.

It’s a big blow to receive lower than market value for a to player, but we are at least getting good money for him and not losing him for free.

According to Terreur, “Courtois to Real will be done”, which sounds pretty definitive, but only “when Chelsea have a new goalkeeper”.

That’s easier said than done, and competition for goalies is hotter than ever. It’s going to be a busy few days once again.
