Bizzarre match rating gives N’Golo Kante lowest tally of all starters at the World Cup final

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante is celebrating the triumph of the World Cup after his France side beat Croatia 4-2 in the final at the Luzhniki stadium but he will not be happy with L’Equipe’s match rating of him.

The final produced some excellent performances from either side but the usually exhilarating and tireless Kante was not one of those players L’Equipe thought highly of.

In truth, the enterprising midfielder was not at his best in the final and was not by a distance not at the highest level, as we have come to appreciate in recent years.

He was, naturally, energetic in midfield but seemed to think twice about tackles, especially after he was booked for a foul on Ivan Perisic in the first half of the match.

But still L’Equipe could have done better with their scoring of his display. The French newspaper, via BT Sport’s James McManus, gave Kante a lowly three, while the rest of his teammates enjoyed better marks for their contribution to the success.
