Clement Lenglet not the ideal option for limited Chelsea transfer strategy

Chelsea have been named today by Football.London, amongst others, as one of the sides competing for the signature of Clement Lenglet.

The Frenchman has made a real impression in a season and a half at Sevilla, emerging as one of the most interesting young central defensive prospects in the top 5 leagues.

But Chelsea should be cautious approaching a deal.

Firstly there is their own situation: they have a wealth of central defenders, both on loan and at the club now. It’s not a particular position of need.

They have a limited summer budget, and spending a chunk on one of our strong positions doesn’t make a huge amount of sense.

Of course an exception would be made is Lenglet was a truly world class talent, but there are questions over that too.

While he’s shown himself to be a classy ball playing defender at times, he’s hardly established and has had some really ropey showings too.

There’s huge promise there for sure, but Chelsea have young defensive talents already. The money can be better spend elsewhere.
