Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has been called up for England’s World Cup squad travelling to Russia, as you can read on any outlet including the BBC.
A year ago you would probably have made Cahill favourite to be starter for Gareth Southgate’s team in Russia as he came to the end of a title winning season with his club, as an integral part of the best back three in the league.
But a year that has seen Cahill lose his Chelsea first team spot and then his England squad place cast that into serious doubt.
He wasn’t included in the squads for friendlies before Christmas, and began to look a long shot for this summer.
However the dearth of quality in the centre of defence, as well as a successful recent run back in Antonio Conte’s team has been enough to get Cahill a recall, and means that Ruben Loftus-Cheek isn’t the only Blue in the England squad.
