Why Barcelona’s £80m move for Chelsea goal-machine doesn’t add up

Barcelona spent big last summer, bringing in Ousmane Dembele and then Yerry Mina and Philippe Coutinho in January.

According to extremely unreliable Spanish transfer outlet Don Balon, they now want to add a Premier League star to their rebuild, one that will cost them £80m.

That man is Marcos Alonso, and it may be a little hard for Chelsea fans who have seen a lot of the Spaniard to believe this particular transfer rumour.

That’s not to say that Alonso hasn’t been great for Chelsea, and isn’t a good player, but he’s probably not a dream Barcelona full back.

His height and work rate make him great in the Premier League, but he doesn’t have the exceptional technical ability to fit into a Barca side.

He also lacks the pace of current incumbent Jordi Alba, who would take some dislodging from the position after several exceptional seasons.

Unless something significant changes, Alonso and his wonderful free kicks will be back at the Bridge next season.
