Olivier Giroud must start after Alvaro Morata’s worrying regression

Alvaro Morata had made some serious progress in the last couple of games for Chelsea, scoring in each and looking like more of a solid presence leading the line for the team.

That hard work was very much undone yesterday however, as the Spaniard struggled for 60 minutes and was then removed.

Even worse for the former Real Madrid man, his replacement Olivier Giroud scored twice in the remaining half an hour as the Blues mounted a superb comeback.

Looking at Twitter after the game, the overwhelming sentiment was that Giroud has to start the next fixture. Not only did he score twice, the team also just looked fundamentally more dangerous with him playing.

Antonio Conte has given Morata no end of chances, but for now it looks like the ball is back in Giroud’s court, and he must be favourite to see out the season as first choice striker now.
