Andreas Christensen has been a breath of fresh air. His emergence in the Chelsea first team has given fans the answer they have craved over a long period of time. He has become the hope for fans that the academy after all is not only a money generating facility, but capable of producing quality that can become Stamford Bridge heroes in the years to come.
Such a rise does not come easy in the top flight, but it’s safe to say Christensen deserves every bit of it. He also deserves the rest Antonio Conte should give him in the game against Arsenal.
The young Dane has featured prominently this season after David Luiz’s feud with Conte in October. He took his place as one of the back three and has not looked back since.
Christensen. who spent two years at Borussia Monchengladbach before returning to Chelsea last summer, has now made 26 appearances in all competitions and had to be substituted after a head injury scare against Brighton. A rest for the center back is a must now and Conte has no excuses.
In the crucial game against Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday, David Luiz has the right mentality and quality to stand in for the calm and composed Christensen, who has not completed the last two Chelsea games in the Premier League.
As Conte rightly pointed out after the Brighton win last Saturday, Luiz’s presence on the bench made it easy for a change, at the sight of possible serious injury to his latest prodigy.
Conte on Christensen: “The player didn’t want to come off but at the same time when you have on the bench players like David Luiz it was simple for me, to tell him no. Also, the referee tried to force this substitution.
