“We are trying to change the average age of our team” – Antonio Conte reveals some of his squad building secrets

Antonio Conte yesterday had an interview in the Daily Telegraph that covered various interesting topics.

The quotes that were picked out in most outlets focused on Conte’s discussion of Manchester City’s transfer policy. The manager hinted strongly that his club had failed in competing for players with the Premier League leaders, and even named Kyle Walker as one of those who they had won a bidding war with Conte’s club for.

But there was also interesting insight into the squad composition at Chelsea, and how it’s changing. Conte specifically mentioned that he’s trying to lower the average age of the team, and we’ve seen plenty of evidence of that at the back, where Andreas Christensen has supplanted David Luiz in his back three.

Tiemoue Bakayoko is now also a regular starter, and Alvaro Morata is young too. The next stage will presumably be the phasing out of Gary Cahill at the back, along with Pedro and Willian further forward.
