Gary Cahill reveals why Chelsea failed to beat Atletico Madrid

Gary Cahill has praised the efforts of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak after Chelsea failed to secure victory against their Spanish opponents on Wednesday in the Champions League.

The shot stopper made some remarkable saves in the game, keeping out Alvaro Morata and Andreas Christensen when they found themselves one on one with the goalkeeper.

One could look at it another way though and describe Chelsea as wasteful as some of the several chances missed at Stamford Bridge should have been converted.

The Blues were guilty of failing to convert the chances that would have seen them win the game and more importantly finish the six-game group stage as highest finishers alongside AS Roma, Atletico and Qarabag.

Gary Cahill admits Chelsea’s profligacy in front of goal, but also lauds Oblak for the top saves that kept his side in the game.

“We more than deserved the win, we had some fantastic chances. How have we not won? We should have won.

“You can pick holes in any goal you concede but overall our performance was good. Jan Oblak was fantastic today, he’s had an amazing game.”
