Dennis Wise: This is Chelsea’s weakest position in their squad

Chelsea are at their weakest in central midfield after failing to replace Frank Lampard when the legend departed the club in 2015, according to Chelsea legend Dennis Wise.

This comes even after Chelsea have spent an awful amount of money in that department in order to replace cult heroes Michael Ballack, Lampard, Essien and co.

The likes of N’Golo Kate have been signed to help cushion the back four and provide good enough protection for the defense. But going forward through the midfield has been a problem for Antonio Conte’s men.

Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic gave Chelsea a solid midfield in 2015 season, where Jose Mourinho won his third Premier League trophy. Conte’s title win was also helped by the Matic-Kante midfielder combo. But generally, the scoring prowess Lampard produced at Stamford Bridge has not been replaced as Chelsea struggle for a top class midfielder, capable of producing magic out of nothing from central midfield as echoed by Wise.

“[Chelsea need] not only a centre-forward but a goal-scoring central midfield player.

I look at Kante and Bakayoko – they’re very similar. When can one of them really break into the box and score a goal? Kante is great at what he does – he breaks everything up and Bakayoko is a bit like him.

That’s what I think also Chelsea also need [in January]. Frank Lampard did it for years and Frank hasn’t been replaced yet. You want to see more goals from your midfield two.

Wise’s words may be true after all with Chelsea’s three midfielder Bakayoko, Fabregas and Kante contributing only six goals between them this season.
