“Chelsea must buy in January” – Blues told to buy immediate reinforcements

Chelsea correspondent at Goal.com Nizaar Kinsella is not a fan of the club, but given he follows them up and down the country and goes to every game, he knows just as much about them as nay Blues fan.

His piece today has the headline “Chelsea must buy in January”, and he makes a point that few would disagree with.

Antonio Conte’s team are now 16 points behind Man City and face Barcelona in the Champions League. Kinsella makes the point that they must buy in order to close this gap. Man City are spending hundreds of millions every summer, and have taken their team to the next level. Chelsea are some way behind now.

That’s evident in the depth of the two sides: yesterday Chelsea played without Alvaro Morata, their main striker, who was suspended. So weak were their options on the bench that Conte played without a striker rather than play Michy Batshuayi, whose time at the Bridge appears to almost be over.

Spending money can’t solve everything in football, but it’s pretty clear the benefits it would have here.
