Chelsea 1-0 Southampton – Player Ratings

Chelsea laboured to a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge this afternoon against a Southampton side that offered almost nothing going forwards.

The Blues got their lead on the stroke of half time thanks to a Marcos Alonso free kick, and that proved to be the only goal of the game despite a host of second half chances for Antonio Conte’s men to put the game to bed.

Here are our ratings from today’s featured Chelsea players…

Starting Eleven:

Thibaut Courtois – 7 – Totally untroubled in the first half and large parts of the second, but snapped into life twice to deny Charlie Austin smartly with his legs.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7 – Solid performance at the back from the reliable Spaniard, who got forward quite a lot too as the Blues pushed forward for a second goal

Andreas Christensen – 7 – Defensively solid and good on the ball, as we’ve come to expect.

Gary Cahill- 6 – Had very little to do as Southampton struggled to get the ball forward. Had one slight wobble towards the end as he put a ball out for an unnecessary corner.

Victor Moses – 7 – Lively down the right, providing a constant outlet for the team on that side.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – 6 – One of his better games, stayed deep and broke up attacks while looking to pick out the front three.

N’Golo Kante – 7 -Excellent as always, shutting down any offensive momentum that Southampton tried to produce.

Marcos Alonso – 7 – Always a threat down the left and scored the free kick that ended up wining the game for his team.

Pedro – 6 – Busy and hard working without much end product.

Willian – 7 –Constantly tried flicks, shots and passes that didn’t come off but deserves credit for trying to make things happen.

Eden Hazard – 6 – Had a few flashes of inspiration but ultimately wasn’t up to his usual standards playing as a false 9.
