“There will be time” – Chelsea star not keen on extending contract for now

Thibaut Courtois has put new contract talks with Chelsea on hold for the time being, according to his latest interview.

The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has been widely linked with a return to Spain during the recent tranfer windows, and media brought the topic back to the surface ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League game against Qarabag FK.

According to several sources, Courtois would be interested in staying at Stamford Bridge, but wants a big pay-rise in order to remain at the club. He’s told to be earning as much as £120,000-a-week at the moment, but wants to be rewarded for playing such a big part in Chelsea’s last two title winning seasons.

Speaking to the Guardian, Courtois says that he wants to focus on the ongoing season and will leave the contract talks for his agent to handle.

“The most important thing is to perform well for myself and the team.

Regarding my contract, that’s something where Chelsea must deal with my agent. I don’t think there have been any new developments.

We have so many games at the moment, and I prefer to focus on the team’s matches, my own performances, and there will be time enough towards the end of the season to have talks.”

Manchester United’s David De Gea is currently the Premier League’s highest earning goalkeeper with a weekly salary of £200,000, which is exactly the amount that Courtois is also looking to pocket.

Chelsea even sold club legend Petr Cech to fierce rivals Arsenal in order to hand the first-choice keeper’s spot exclusively for Courtois, so it would be very sad to see the Belgium international leave the club just like that.
