Chelsea still likely to make January transfers despite departure of key figure

The January window is getting closer, so inevitably the transfer rumours are starting to warm up again just as the Christmas lights go up across the country.

Chelsea have had some pretty quiet Januaries in recent years, with outgoing transfers more prominent than incoming last year, but there’s rarely a window where they get no business done at all.

Even if it’s simply the reshuffling of some loan players to destinations where they may play more, there will be some news from Cobham at some point this winter.

One question nobody has the answer to is how the departure of Michel Emenalo will change the club’s strategy. It’s certain that it’s hardly likely to help the club move into deals any quicker than they would have done with him here, but there’s no reason it should preclude any moves. With Marina organising the financial side of the deals, and Emenalo presumably leaving behind a dossier and a list of targets, very little may change in the short term at all.
