Chelsea cast their eye over local defender

Chelsea are linked with players every day, including some reasonable and some very tenuous connections. Yesterday’s rumours about Ben Davies seemed to be one of the latter.

Goal reported that the Blues are interested in Tottenham full back Ben Davies to upgrade “their ageing defensive unit”.

Davies is a backup player for Spurs, where he has found it tough to establish himself ahead of the outstanding Danny Rose.

Quite why he would have any more success getting ahead of Marcos Alonso in the Chelsea hierarchy is difficult to understand.

If Branislav Ivanovic does indeed leave the club this January then reinforcements will be needed, and the Blues could do much worse than Welsh international Davies, who can play on both sides of defence and has shown a lot of ability.

But buying the 23-year-old would be a serious blow to the encouraging growth of Ola Aina, who has been given more and more minutes as the season has progressed.
