Mertesacker: We must learn from Chelsea

Arsenal center back Per Mertesacker has admitted that his side will have to learn from Chelsea’s performances last season if they stand a chance of winning the Premier League title this season.

Arsenal have been mentioned by experts as a contender this season after their surge towards the title late last season.

Most importantly, the north London club won the FA Cup last season and have secured the services of former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Ahead of the Community Shield encounter with the Blues, Mertesacker told the club’s official website,

When we’ve headed to Wembley in the past, it’s generally either been for a semi-final or a final. We haven’t played Chelsea at Wembley in such a situation for a long time. They played really well last season, they were really consistent and always defended well from the front.

Talk of winning the Premier League will excite Arsenal fans and the 30-year old German defender believes Chelsea are the team to beat.

I think if we can learn something from Chelsea, it’s to be consistent over the whole season. You need to be consistent, especially in the league. In the cup, you can win it with six straight victories, which we managed to do twice. The hunger is still there to win a cup and to stay cup winners. The consistency over the whole season is vital. It’s what everyone wants, the players and the fans.
