Arsene Wenger dismisses Mourinho’s ‘big-spending’ jibe

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has defended his transfer policy this summer after Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho labelled his rivals in the Premier League ‘big spenders’.

The Portuguese tactician refereed to his rivals’ expenditure this summer transfer window stating they were buying the title saying,

In the beginning of Mr Abramovich coming to Chelsea, Chelsea was buying the title. Now, they are buying the title. All of them, they are buying the title. It is up to us to be strong and to fight them and, obviously, to try and win it again, even without the big investments.

In what seemed to be a direct attack on Arsenal’s transfers in the recent seasons, Mourinho named Chelsea’s North London rivals’ purchases as the reason they will be contenders next season.

If you put (Mesut) Ozil plus Alexis Sanchez, plus (Calum) Chambers, plus (Mathiue) Debuchy you will maybe find a surprise. It’s a fantastic squad; lots and lots of good players, a fantastic goalkeeper. I think they are more than ready to be a title contenders.

That provoked a reaction from Wenger when quizzed about Mourinho’s comments.

If you want to create success – which we want desperately – you focus on what happens inside, just try to do as well as we can and believe in the football we want to play and let other people talk. We spend when we think we have to spend and do not listen too much to what people think or say.

Chelsea and Arsenal will face each other in this year’s Community Shield as they finalize preparations for the start of this seasons’ Premier League.
