When you pick a second choice goalie, you think about a lot of things, and footballing ability isn’t always top of the list.
A backup keeper plays so little that other concerns become more important. How much do they cost? Will they agitate to leave? Can they fill a homegrown slot? Can they do a job if called upon? Will they be a positive presence in the dressing room?

Those were all questions Chelsea had to answer when they chose to pick up Willy Caballero on a free, and it seems they were right to count on the final statement.
Caballero is a top bloke behind the scenes, and he proved that perfectly with his conduct this weekend. Humiliated in the Kepa saga, he didn’t hold grudges,
The Mirror even have quotes from the goalie explaining how he helped out his number one and encouraged them, rather than being annoyed about the situation.
Now that’s what you want from your backup. Well done Willy.
