“I want to play” – Ruben Loftus-Cheek ramps up pressure on Chelsea with threats to leave

This is not the news Chelsea fans wanted to wake up to.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek had an exceptional season at Crystal Palace on loan, and he’s now excelling with England at the World Cup. After a great sub performance against Tunisia, the midfielder looks set for a start against Panama in the next game.

But all these top performances are coming at a cost. Ruben clearly feels he deserves a starting spot at club level now. Just look at these quotes on Sky Sports:

“That’s the key for me next season regarding where I end up. I want to play,” he said.

“I want to play as much as I can. And even this past season just gone I didn’t play as much as I would have liked because of injuries. So I still feel I need a proper season of playing, wherever it is.”

You can see that he’s putting pressure on whoever is the new boss to give him a chance. We like that strategy – just so long as it works, and it doesn’t end up with RLC leaving.

Still, the talent he has is so clear, we’re confident that whoever we pick will give him the assurances he needs to be convinced to stay put at the club where he’s grown up.
