Sarri’s links with aging forward well-founded and tactically smart

Maurizio Sarri has been linked with plenty of his old Napoli players, but there’s one link that stands out as both plausible and possible for the club to achieve.

The Metro are among the many publications reporting that Dries Mertens, the Belgian striker who’s become a true star in the South of Italy, is the key man that Sarri will want to bring to Chelsea with him.

This makes great sense considering Sarri’s system. Chelsea are short on top strikers anyway, and none of the ones they have would be able to replicate what Mertens does in Sarri’s system at the moment.

He’s also old enough to not demand a fee that the club won’t pay. While they might prefer a younger player with resale value, at least they will be able to get Mertens at a relatively low fee.

It’s no guarantee it will happen, but it definitely makes the rumours seem more concrete than some of those you read.
