N’Golo Kante put in a superb showing at the base of France’s midfield as Les Bleus struggled to overcome a tough Australia team.
He kept the Australian attack under wraps, and even had one superb burst of his own into the opposition half in the second period. His passing was superb and his work rate, as ever, was exceptional.

Ultimately his defensive prowess wasn’t really what France needed as they struggled to break down a dogged Australia team. They needed a VAR assisted penalty and a Pogba chip that only just crept over the line to squeak past the dogged Socceroos.
He will have two more chances to impress in the group stage, then presumably bigger games in the knockout rounds where his defensive expertise will be more important. As long as France’s attacking elements get their game together, they can go very with with N’Golo at their base.
