Chelsea’s next manager almost sealed after Gianfranco Zola leaves his short-term job in Africa

Chelsea are getting closer and closer to completing the deal to replace Antonio Conte as manager of the club this summer, after reports indicate Maurizio Sarri is the man for the Blues.

On Monday, some tabloids reported from Italy, via Talk Sport, that Zola will be cutting short his stay at African media giants SuperSports to make a trip to England, as he needs to be part of final discussions for Chelsea’s signing of Sarri.

The former Napoli head coach has been replaced by Carlo Ancelotti at teh Italian club but has yet to be released by Napoli president Aurellio De Laurentiis. Despite Chelsea’s persistent interest in Sarri who guided Napoli to second place in the Italian Serie A, forcing Juventus to increase their gear in the final three games of the season,De Laurentiis is adamant, Chelsea have to pay for his release this summer.

Zola admitted he was leaving the World Cup punditry but did not confirm he was travelling to England to firm up his Chelsea appointment.

I was afraid you were going to ask me this,’ Zola says. ‘Really, I don’t know.

There are a lot of rumours about me, at the moment nothing has happened. We will see what happens in the future. At the moment it is only talking, nothing is decided.

48-year old Zola is reportedly going to be a key member of Sarri’s technical staff next season and the former play maker who scored 69 goals for Chelsea between 1998 and 2003 is going to be highly welcome by the club’s fans.
